Dennis Ray Day, age 61, passed away at his home Friday, October 26, 2012 in Bakersfield, CA while under care of Optimal Hospice and his daughter. He was born June 27, 1951 in Akron, IA to Darwin and Shirley (Jammerthal) Day. He grew up in Granite Falls, MN, Flandreau, SD, and Pipestone, MN, graduating from Pipestone High School in 1970. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Ticonderoga naval ship, where he assisted with Apollo 16 and 17 recoveries after splashdown in 1972. After his discharge from the Navy he became an air traffic controller for Lemoore Naval Air Station. He married Carol Morrow in 1976 in Bakersfield and spent the rest of his life living in CA, starting a job working for the U.S. Post Office in 1977. Carol and Dennis had one daughter, Lindsay, who later blessed them with a grandson, Bradley. Carol and Dennis later divorced but remained friends. Survivors include his daughter, Lindsay Day, grandson, Bradley, ex-wife, Carol Wallace, all of Bakersfield, CA, siblings Nancy Anspach, Montevideo, MN, David (Nancy) Day, Hopkins, MN, Gary (Marilyn) Day, Sioux Falls, SD, Jody Newcomer, Sioux Falls, SD, Sherry (Keith) Forsberg, Luverne, MN, Peggy (Bruce) Carlson, Thompson, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, Darwin and Shirley Day (from Luverne, MN), brothers-in-law Verlyn Anspach and Terry Newcomer. His wishes are that no service be held and his cremains be brought back to MN. Private family service will be held at a later date.
