Guillermina (Willie) Esparza

Guillermina, also known as Willie, was born on April 3, 1940, in Bishop, TX, to Olivio and Aurora Gonzalez. She loved sharing stories from her childhood with her grandkids and great-grandkids—stories about how she was a little traviesa, always getting into trouble with her siblings, riding the tractor with her dad, climbing trees, and hiding under the house to avoid punishment.

From the mid-1960s to 1989, she lived in Arvin, CA, where she managed the Rancho Theater (from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s). If you visited the theater, she either sold you your admission ticket, gave you your first job, yelled at you, or even kicked you out for fighting. She also worked as a CNA from 1981 to 1989, providing special care for elderly patients. An injury forced her into early retirement at the age of 49.

From 1989 to the present, she resided in Bakersfield, CA. In 1990, she met the love of her life, Francisco “Pancho” Esparza. Their love story began when they met at a mutual friend's house in Shafter, CA. Pancho was immediately attracted and asked to know more about her. They began talking and the rest is history. They were married in November 1996 and shared a beautiful life together with lots of love and laughter. They were inseparable—he took the best care of her until her last day on earth.

She loved playing bingo and going to Eagle Mountain Casino, where you could catch her playing two slot machines at once. When people approached her, asking to borrow a machine, she would reply with her feisty attitude, “It’s not mine to let you borrow,” and kept playing. She loved to dance and spent many nights los domingos, en las tardeadas at Aldo’s Nightclub, where she and her viejo would dance the night away. They loved visiting Pancho's family in Sinaloa, Mexico; La Virgen de Guadalupe in Mexico City; and La Virgen de San Juan in Jalisco. In their recent years they enjoyed walking the mall and having lunch—Chinese food with extra shrimp was their favorite.

She was a firecracker. Her witty personality and sarcastic humor made her the life of the party. She was the best cook and made the most delicious pancitos every year for the holidays. She loved her family deeply. After every phone call, we would say, “I love you, Granny,” and she would respond, “I love you too. I love all my babies.” Or sometimes, “I love you too, mamacita—you know I do.”

In her final days, she was surrounded by family, music, and lots of love. She passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at the age of 84. When she left this world, she took a little piece of our hearts with her. She will be deeply missed. However, knowing that she is in heaven celebrating with the Lord and her departed family members gives us peace. We know it was the best celebration when she entered those pearly gates.

Guillermina was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Jessica Gonzalez; her parents; three brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by her husband, Francisco Esparza; her four children, Janie Gonzalez, Jose Gonzalez, Johnny Gonzalez, and Amanda Gonzalez; eight grandchildren, Cassandra Gonzales (Husband Rudy), Armando Aceves (Wife Samantha), Jessica Acuna (Husband Jon), Joey Gonzalez, Joshua Gonzalez, Casey Rush, Jacob Gonzalez, and Olivia Gonzalez; eleven great-grandchildren Jelissa Gonzales-Macias (Wife Alexus), Jaelyn Gonzales, Rudy Gonzales Jr., Arabella Aceves, Aracely Acuna, JLynn Acuna, Natalie Gonzalez, Joseph Gonzalez, Clarie Rush, James Rush, and Evan Gonzalez; two sisters; and one brother.

Guillermina, también conocida como Willie, nació el 3 de abril de 1940 en Bishop, Texas, hija de Olivio y Aurora González. Le encantaba compartir historias de su infancia con sus nietos y bisnietos: historias sobre cómo era una pequeña traviesa, con sus hermanos, montando el tractor con su papá, trepando árboles y escondiéndose debajo de la casa para evitar castigos.

Desde mediados de los 60 hasta 1989, vivió en Arvin, California, donde administró el Teatro Rancho (desde mediados de los 70 hasta principios de los 80). Si ibas al teatro, te vendía la entrada, te daba tu primer trabajo, te gritaba o incluso te echaba por pelear. También trabajó como auxiliar de enfermería certificada (CNA) de 1981 a 1989, brindando atención especial a pacientes de la tercera edad. Una lesión la obligó a jubilarse anticipadamente a los 49 años.

Desde 1989 hasta la actualidad, residió en Bakersfield, California. En 1990, conoció al amor de su vida, Francisco “Pancho” Esparza. Su historia de amor comenzó cuando se conocieron en casa de un amigo en común en Shafter, California. Pancho se sintió inmediatamente atraído y le pidió saber más sobre ella. Empezaron a hablar y el resto es historia. Se casaron en noviembre de 1996 y compartieron una hermosa vida juntos, llena de amor y risas. Eran inseparables: él la cuidó con esmero hasta su último día en la tierra.

Le encantaba jugar al bingo e ir al Casino Eagle Mountain, donde se la podía ver jugando con dos máquinas tragamonedas a la vez. Cuando la gente se le acercaba para pedirle prestada una máquina, respondía con su actitud enérgica: "No me corresponde prestarte la máquina", y seguía jugando. Le encantaba bailar y pasaba muchas noches los domingos, en las tardeadas en el club nocturno Aldo's, donde ella y su viejo bailaban toda la noche. Les encantaba visitar a la familia de Pancho en Sinaloa, México; a la Virgen de Guadalupe en la Ciudad de México; y a la Virgen de San Juan en Jalisco. En sus últimos años, disfrutaban paseando por el centro comercial y almorzando; la comida china con extra de camarones era su favorita.

Era una bomba. Su ingeniosa personalidad y su humor sarcástico la convertían en el alma de la fiesta. Era la mejor cocinera y preparaba los pancitos más deliciosos cada año para las fiestas. Amaba profundamente a su familia. Después de cada llamada, le decíamos: "Te quiero, Granny", y ella respondía: "Yo también te quiero. Amo a todos mis bebés". O a veces: "Yo también te quiero, mamacita, tú sabes que sí".

En sus últimos días, estuvo rodeada de familia, música y mucho amor. Falleció en paz en su casa el domingo 23 de marzo de 2025, a la edad de 84 años. Al dejar este mundo, se llevó un trocito de nuestros corazones. La extrañaremos profundamente. Sin embargo, saber que está en el cielo celebrando con el Señor y sus familiares fallecidos nos da paz. Sabemos que fue la mejor celebración cuando entró por esas puertas del cielo.

Guillermina fue precedida en la muerte por su hija pequeña, Jessica González; sus padres; tres hermanos; y una hermana.

Le sobreviven su esposo, Francisco Esparza; sus hijos, Janie González, José González, Johnny González y Amanda González; ocho nietos; once bisnietos; dos hermanas; y un hermano.

Un agradecimiento especial a Hospicio Hoffman por su amoroso cuidado y apoyo en sus últimos días.
