Jerome Martinez

01/12/1947 -04/29/2025

Jerome, who was affectionately known as “Jerry” received his wings on a Tuesday afternoon in his home with his loved ones by his side.

He was born in Bakersfield where he attended local schools and was a proud Driller graduate of Bakersfield High School- Class of 1965.

One word to describe him would be “diligent “ as he was a hard working man. His career as a Meat Cutter spanned 42 years having worked for Joe’s National Market, Alpha Beta and Ralph’s.

He retired as a Meat Cutter and continued his “busy work “ as a handy man for Property Rentals. He could repair most anything and helped his family members with all jobs whenever he was needed. Jerry even had a stint as a bus driver for GET bus in Bakersfield.

Did someone say “Golf” ? Oh yes, he loved playing golf and watching it on TV! He loved winning the round against his buddies and enjoying a pitcher of beer!

Our beloved Jerry was preceded in death by his first- born daughter, Monica Martinez Hoyland. Other family members who have passed are his parents Fred and Cora Cardiel, his brothers, Donald Martinez and Manuel Cardiel and his sister, Nancy Terrazas.

Loving survivors include his daughter Lana Marie, his grandson, Sebastian Liebel , and granddaughters Lea Martinez and Alice Hoyland. He shares his children and grandchildren with his former spouse , Rose Martinez.

The siblings share a special bond with Jerry and will miss him fiercely. His siblings are Pauline Garton (Ron) , Patsy Nieto ( Tommy) , Sylvia Valdez ( Ruben), Alfred Cardiel, Elizabeth Marshall ( Don), and Valerie Espinoza (Robert).

He also is survived by his loving Aunt Dolores Garibay. There are aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and long time friends who will miss him.

Even though Jerome is no longer with us physically, he will be a constant light in our lives. May eternal light shine upon him and all the faithfully departed.

A visitation is planned for May 12th from 5:30pm -8:30 pm with a rosary planned for 7 pm at Alma Funeral Home in Bakersfield, CA.

A graveside service will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield at 10 am on May 13th, 2025.
