John Robert Folger Obituary

John Robert Folger, 65, of Bakersfield, passed away on April 30th, 2025. Born on February 4th, 1960, in San Francisco, California, John was the oldest of three children born to Robert Carlyle Folger and Evelyn Joyce Weeks Folger. From an early age, he showed a deep sense of duty and love for his country. After graduating from West High School, John proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served with honor and distinction. He earned the title of Series Honor Man in bootcamp. He graduated number one in military police school and went on to serve as a presidential guard on HMX-1 “Marine One” for Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. He also served as a respected drill instructor at MCRD, demonstrating a passion for leadership and excellence. Following his service in the Marines, John embarked on a successful career with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department. His work in law enforcement, combined with his military service, reflected his unwavering strength, courage, and dedication to protecting others. Eventually, John followed in his father's footsteps and began a new chapter as an educator. For 25 years, he taught history at Fairfax Junior High School, where he formed lifelong bonds with his coworkers and found joy in inspiring his students. John’s life outside of work was just as fulfilling. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Cambria, Selah, Matthew, Emily, Madison, Leah, Cameron, and Liam, who brought immense joy to his life. When seeking peace and solitude, John could be found in the mountains of Kernville. He enjoyed riding in his 1969 Plymouth Fury sheriff car and his red Honda scooter. A true animal lover, John was known for the Folger rescue that began on Wetherley. He was a loyal 49ers fan, loved gardening, and was the biggest cheerleader to his grandchildren. John brought laughter and warmth to every room he entered. He loved dirt biking as a family, attending concerts, and watching movies. He was always there to support his children through sports and Boy Scouts and was often found doing yard work on early mornings. More than anything, John was a mentor, a hero, and a rock to those who loved him. His life was one of selfless service, deep love, and a legacy that will never be forgotten. He is survived by his son Christopher Folger and fiancée Teresa Bond of Broken Arrow, OK; son Ryan and Brenda Folger of Bakersfield, CA; and stepdaughter Teri Jones of Bakersfield, CA. Also surviving him are his brother Jeff and wife Marcella Folger of Bakersfield, CA; sister-in-law Tatyana Folger of Bakersfield, CA; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda; his twin brother, Jim Folger; and many dear friends. John Robert Folger’s presence, wisdom, and love will be missed beyond words.
